Day off

I remember July 18 2005; it was the weekend that Harry Potter 6 came out, and I spent it in the garden reading. For a whole day I was able to lose myself in another world, and forget about bombs and terror and violence. It was a mini-holiday, a sunshine blessing.

And now Harry Potter 7 is out, and my copy has just arrived. The door bell rang, and I scrambled out of bed, groggy after an appalling night's sleep, and opened the door blearily in my dressing gown, to find my giggling postman calling ''Harr-eeee time!''.

''Is this for you, or your kids?'' he asked, handing me two packages
''Er...''
''Hee! Hee! Hee!'' he chortled. ''I've been saying that to everyone and they all look embarassed and then their faces go ten years younger! So now you're...fifteen, hey?''
I went pink and took the copies off him and said thanks.
He sauntered off, still grinning. ''I like today! Making everyone happy! Everyone's going to be very quiet on your street today, all reading away, hee!''

I rushed back in and woke J by plonking the book on his pillow.

We're having the day off. We need it.
Review later.

hi rachel,

my friend who works for borders- when she arrived at her store around 11 pm last nite- there must have been THOUSANDS waiting on line-some probably for a day or two. Then the doors opened at 12:01 am ny time- but the security people kept things under control.

Are you ready for this? the store will be open until 9 pm ny time today-20 hours after it opened.

Im all for capitalism, but dont you think that this is a bit much?

when things calm down, i will inquire, oops enquire about getting a copy of your book.

hope all is well.

seth :)

the funny thing is that for a moment your postman looked like he became a character out of a Harry Potter book himself...

which makes me say, hey, it might not be top class literature, but if it can make people happy like that, isn't it good per se?

personally, I love it.

I think the hysteria is slightly mad, but I said somewhere else, the fact that for a weekend much of the the world was rapt in a magical book makes me a bit choked. Whatever people have said about JKR's prose, she has done millions of children a service if she has lit a flame that will continue to burn for the rest of their lives: the light that a good book can bring is a blessed companion.
